< Arte Abierto > Foundation interest in housing all the disciplines of contemporary art in its physical spaces, establishes here a site dedicated to the work of the “Atelier”, of the artist’s workshop. The intention of this initiative is to experiment and reveal the processes that give life to the creator’s ideas and how they are polished and taken to the limit, to their production.

Atelier Abierto‘s room named after the pedagogical and participatory lines of work that it intends to exhibit. Through this program we will develop unique educational strategies and activities to have direct contact with our audiences. To do this, we will collaborate with guest artists and experts whose strategies and concepts of artistic production are aligned with our institutional values and objectives, and propose specific projects of contemporary art that are easy to read and accessible to our audiences.

Since 2019 we have worked with Sebastián Romo, founder and creator of Atelier Romo. The result of this significant collaboration is the exhibition Fury and Poetry. Atelier Romo 10 Years, which illustrates a pedagogical methodology that has operated – over a decade, in the artistic and cultural field of our country – under the concept of deep education, understood as all knowledge that accompanies us and improves our life everyday.

The result is a playful exhibition in which priority is given to the spirit of the workshop, of various processes framed by practical and constant learning. An exhibition where the strategies and the constant changes implemented that build a methodology developed over ten years of work are revealed.

‘BORDERLANDS’

RAFAEL LOZANO-HEMMER IN ‘BORDERLANDS’
EXTENDED SEGMENT | ART21

Enter here to watch it directly on YouTube.

Art21 proudly presents this special extended segment as a complement to the “Borderlands” episode from the tenth season of the “Art in the Twenty-First Century” series. Edited to focus on a singular artist narrative, this film contains original material not included in the television broadcast.

Known for his large-scale, interactive installations, Rafael Lozano-Hemmer uses contemporary technologies like computerized surveillance, heart-rate sensors, and robotics to create participatory experiences and platforms for public participation and connection. The artist frequently works in and transforms public spaces, creating awe-inspiring, poetic, and critical installations, like ‘Voz Alta’: a massive megaphone system erected in a Mexico City plaza to commemorate the infamous Tlatelolco student massacre in 1968. Spurred by his Mexican heritage and the growing nationalism in the United States, Lozano-Hemmer embarks on his most ambitious project to date: ‘Border Tuner’, an enormous intercom system at the border between El Paso and Juárez that allows participants from both sides to speak and listen to each other via radio-enabled searchlights.

At his studio in Montreal, the artist works with a team of scientists, engineers, programmers, architects, and designers to develop the project; at the El Paso–Juárez border, he invites local artists and performers and members of the public to use ‘Border Tuner’ to listen to, share, and visualize their voices and stories. Highlighting the intimate, personal relations in a public space that is otherwise systematically dehumanizing, Lozano-Hemmer explains, “The most important role that art can play is that of making complexity visible. The usage of technology is inevitable; it’s up to the artist to use those technologies to create experiences that are intimate, connected, and critical.”

This extended segment includes Remote Pulse, 2019; an interactive installation consisting of two identical pulse-sensing stations that are interconnected over the internet. When a person places their hands on one station automatically the person on the other station feels their pulse, as the plates vibrate in sync with the heartbeat of the remote person, and vice versa. The piece was originally presented as part of Lozano-Hemmer’s Border Tuner’ installation across the US-Mexico border, with one station in Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua and the other in El Paso, Texas. This piece is part of ‘Rafael Lozano-Hemmer: Latidos’ exhibition showing at < Arte Abierto > until December 13th, 2020 and will stay here permanently.

‘Borderlands’ premiered on October 2nd, 2020 on PBS. Enter here to watch the whole episode on PBS.

The monographic exhibition that addresses the biometric work of this Mexican artist, seeks to alter identification and determination technologies to create connective experiences on an architectural scale. In Heartbeat, the audience’s vital signs are taken and recorded as repetitive sequences that are displayed as flashing lights, panoramic soundscapes, ripples in tanks, haptic feedback, and animated fingerprints.

was born in Mexico City in 1967. He was the first official artist to represent our country at the 52nd Venice Biennale with the work Some things happen more times than all the time. For years, he has been developing interactive installations that are at the intersection between architecture and performance.

ATELIER ABIERTO

ATELIER ABIERTO: THE DIDACTIC AND COLLABORATIVE NATURE OF ART

< Arte Abierto > is a non-profit association founded in 2019 dedicated to the creation and promotion of cultural projects and specific art work through the implementation of an ambitious / comprehensive / innovative model that takes as a starting point the physical conditions of Artz Pedregal Architectural Complex –a project developed and designed by Sordo Madaleno.

< Arte Abierto >‘s work model is based on collaborating with artists and experts, aligned to our institutional values and objectives through their work and artistic expressions, with specific contemporary art projects. Each platform at < Arte Abierto > offers different formats and experiences at different levels and to different audiences.

Since 2019 we have been working with Sebastián Romo, founder and creator of Atelier Romo, the result of this significant collaboration is named Atelier Abierto. This project is designed as a place outside the main exhibition room Espacio Arte Abierto (exhibition space where Rafael Lozano-Hemmer, Latidos) is now located.

Based on its pedagogical and participatory lines of work, Atelier Abierto is one of the most important conceptual components of our institution. Thanks to the collaboration with Atelier Romo we will be able to develop strategies and unique educational and public activities for direct contact with visitors, through creative processes of different types and with different durations (which include weekend activities, intensive workshops and few hours aimed at the diversity of publics who attend Artz Pedregal– space where < Arte Abierto > has its facilities: exhibitions and work).

Atelier Romo. For ten years, it has developed an arts-based, comprehensive and multidisciplinary educational methodology. Currently, the guiding axis is focused on deep education understood as all knowledge that accompanies us and improves our daily life.

Atelier Romo has had various collaborations with institutions such as Museo Tamayo, Fundación Alumnos 47, Colección Jumex, various universities and art centers in the interior of the country, and abroad with the Fashion Institute of Technology in Nueva York. Also, he was invited to develop a special project for the XII Bienal FEMSA.

In addition to the five printed monographs that he has compiled throughout his history, he has presented multiple exhibition and film projects in spaces such as Casa Vecina, Museo Tamayo, Sala de Arte Público Siqueiros, La Tallera, Centro de Artes Visuales de Mérida and Instituto Cervantes Nueva York, among others.

Since the beginning, Atelier Romo has had a group of very high-level collaborators: award-winning filmmakers and Oscar winners, museum directors and specialized curators, and renowned artists, both national and international.

The methodology consists of integrating the body, thought, culture and art from constant and disciplined practice, in a relaxed work environment that has all the requirements to learn and create without limitations.

Its lines of work are Visual Thought and Furniture Design; the basic principles for smooth construction, including sewing, electricity, and model building; and the development of a final project with the closing of an exhibition and an editorial publication.

Art and culture are intertwined but they are not the same thing. Although entertainment and entertainment are part of the culture, art is its most sophisticated practice. Culture allows us to expand our possibilities of perception, art to deepen them and education to enhance them, practice them and enjoy them.

Given its context, Atelier Abierto has all the potential to become a true avant-garde project. It can be a benchmark for new pedagogical, exhibition, dissemination models and how to efficiently bring culture to all kinds of audiences.

Artz Pedregal is in a privileged position, it has the perfect balance between a public space and a private / controlled one. This greatly facilitates the implementation of activities produced from the Atelier Abierto to all attendees.

WHAT IS FREEDOM?

WHAT IS FREEDOM?

< Arte Abierto > invites everyone interested to participate with us in a collective reflection on the concept of ‘Freedom’ and what it means for each of you and us in this uncertain time, where we undoubtedly need to rethink the absence of coexistence and social interaction and find new ways to create and believe in the community.

We join the vast sea of artistic initiatives that provide and stimulate moments of thought, awareness and reflection.

We firmly believe that this is are special times, ideal for recognizing the transforming essence that art brings to complex situations, to accept that art is an engine of creativity, of new thoughts, of invention of new horizons that help to turn the way of thinking to other realities that enrich and help to assimilate the moment we are living.

We invite everyone to have a moment of personal creativity that will eventually become part of a collective.

We want to be very respectful of the time, space and resources that each one of you have, so we are open to receiving any idea, thought, image, gesture, drawing, design or game that you want to share with us.

You can send us whatever inspires you: photographs, videos, music, writing.

BASES
