Luz instante is a journey through a series of optical artifacts that create a sensory continuum.

Luz instante is a journey through a series of optical artifacts that generate a continuous sensorial experience. Each piece, by fusing light, space and time, encourages us to experiment with our bodies. It is an invitation for each participant to own and inhabit the artworks from their own place. Presence is the factor that activates them, because when entering a space, in turn, it enters us and the experience becomes an exchange, a fusion between subject and object, in a here and now of light constituted by the spatial encounters.

This passage through light begins with an artwork on outside, composed of a series of hanging prisms and mirrors placed at ground level, which come to life and dialogue with the sun's rays, causing temporary, intermittent, random effects with their reflections. Towards the interior of the exhibition room, on the other hand, light appears as a controlled physical agent, which becomes a substantial element of optical artifacts. The pieces emulate phenomena that occur in nature, in everyday situations that we can see, but not always observe. In this way, they become extensions of the human body that lead us to size spaces that seem unusual, but are there, in our day-to-day life. They are devices that fuse the materiality of specular surfaces with introspection, emotional impressions, and curiosity.

The artifacts transform during the journey and delimit the interaction or open it to contain us, dosing the perceptual involvement, first the eye and then the body, as if we were progressively activating our sensory capacities. This play with the viewer's perception within the different spaces causes immersive situations that lead to a unique moment of discovery. From her experiments with space, virtual sculptures emerge, geometric and illusory three-dimensional figurations that are discovered inside her kaleidoscopes. ‘Sculptures of light’ Julia calls them because light is precisely the substance of these pieces.

With the exhibition Luz instante, Julia Carrillo moves a part of her experimentation laboratory to Espacio Arte Abierto. The exhibit is the result of her studies on light, especially on how it creates spaces and the ability it gives us to perceive what we inhabit, distinguish certain atmospheres, and recognize moments.

Bio
Julia Carrillo

Julia Carrillo (Mexico, 1987) has created a laboratory for space exploration, a site for the construction of devices that arise from studies on geometric optics and physics. This laboratory travels with her, in her notebooks, in notes on napkins, in her books, in her phone. Her arsenal grows almost daily; if the cat moves a fragment of a mirror and an unusual projection is created; if she notices a momentary balance in her bubble clusters; if she discovers a drawing of some ancient astronomical artifact. Julia is intrigued by the physical phenomena that occur daily, the random condition of nature, laws and forces. These phenomena become relevant to her work in the most unexpected circumstances; they do not arise from scientific research. They emerge in contemplative moments during a walk, in the observation of certain atmospheres, in the daily dynamics of instability, balance and movement of everything... there she finds work material.

From her experiments with space  virtual sculptures emerge, geometric and illusory three-dimensional figures are discovered inside her kaleidoscopes, which Julia calls light sculptures, because light is precisely the material of these pieces.

Julia studied Mathematics at the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México and a master’s in visual arts at the Academia de San Carlos, later she studied at the School of Visual Arts in New York (SVA). She relates her artistic practice with notions derived from mathematics and physics to construct an approach to natural phenomena, such as the transformation of space, the movements of light, the travels of sound and the dynamics of fluid forces.

Her solo exhibitions include La luce e la sua assenza at A Pick Gallery (Italy, 2021); Estrofas de agua at Centro Cultural Bucareli 69 (Mexico, 2019) and Geometrías de la Luz at Centro de Ciencias de la Complejidad (C3), UNAM (Mexico, 2017). She has also participated in group exhibitions in Mexico and abroad. She is a beneficiary of the Young Creators Program of the the Fondo Nacional para la Cultura y las Artes (FONCA) and the ACT Program (Art, Science and Technology) of the Ministry of Culture / UNAM, to name a few. She has participated as a guest artist in the residency of the Artistic Residency Program Laboratorio Arte A. C. of the Tecnológico de Monterrey, Mexico (2020); MMCA International Artist-in-Residence Program of the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Seoul, Korea (2019) and Flux Factory in New York, USA, (2014) among others. She was recently selected artist for the Art OMI Residency (2020, now scheduled for 2022).

She is currently a researcher at C3 (Centro de Ciencias de la Complejidad, UNAM) and she is a beneficiary of the Young Creators Program of the Fondo Nacional para la Cultura y las Artes (FONCA).
