DEL 27 – 30.NOV.2023
Arte Abierto Pedregal
PB

A 4-session workshop exploring the interplay between photography and drawing to examine the boundaries between portraiture, advertising, and our surroundings, led by Yvonne Venegas and Álvaro Verduzco.

Exploring drawing as a way to observe the images around us, each session will combine drawing exercises with natural and artificial light photography practices. We will review portrait photography and iconic advertising campaigns, as well as conduct walks and field explorations around Arte Abierto with the artist, whose work explores the different uses, notions, and accidents of portrait photography, from its social and intimate function to the ambiguity that arises between planned and unplanned gestures.

The workshop's objective is to provide each participant with tools to experiment with the vastness of the portrait genre and to offer a broader perspective on the relationships between advertising dynamics and the images that surround us.

As part of this workshop, we will also feature the participation of artist Álvaro Verduzco for a special drawing session.

*No prior experience is needed. The idea is to work with your cell phone camera or whatever equipment you have. If you have a professional camera, you are welcome to bring it.

** Workshop duration: 4 days

Fee: $500 pesos.

Álvaro Verduzco

He earned a Bachelor's degree in Plastic Arts from the National School of Plastic Arts at UNAM (1997-2001) and a postgraduate degree in practical theory from Goldsmiths College, University of London, UK (2003-2004).

His work spans from the smallest piece of paper to large walls in site-specific installations, utilizing a wide range of media (from pencil, collage, video, and installation, to name a few). He problematizes what can be termed a phenomenology of drawing, using the mechanisms of memory as his primary object of study.

His influences vary widely thanks to extensive research into classical, contemporary, and modernist art history, including figures such as David Alfaro Siqueiros (Mexico 1896-1974) and José Guadalupe Posada (Mexico 1813-1952), as well as the work of Dorothea Rockburn (USA-1932), William Anastasi (USA-1933), and Raymond Pettibon (USA-1957). His inspirations also include Albrecht Dürer (Germany 1471-1528), Hieronymus Bosch (Flanders 1516), On Kawara (Japan 1932-USA 2014), and Jis and Trino (Guadalajara Jalisco 1963, Guadalajara Jalisco 1961), among many others.

Álvaro lives and works in Mexico City.
