Conversation with Tonatiuh Martínez about the processes Taller de Paisaje Entorno undertakes to develop landscape projects in locations with unique characteristics and needs.
Within any architectural, residential, or urban planning, an environment is always present: a mix of material, natural, climatic, or symbolic aspects that are interconnected. Landscape architecture projects enable buildings and nature to coexist and find a real and functional integration. There are gardens that produce aromas, wild or minimalist gardens, gardens with microfauna, or gardens where architecture is not present, but how can we create natural atmospheres and sensations with a landscape linked to an architectural project, or without one? What aspects are considered to ensure that an open space or a garden has the necessary elements to connect and integrate as much as possible with the daily reality of its surroundings and its nature?
In this Drift, we will explore the processes carried out by the Taller de Paisaje Entorno, a landscape architecture firm located in Mexico City and made up of an interdisciplinary team of architects, landscape designers, and artisans, dedicated to the design, development, execution, and consulting of landscape projects at architectural, urban, and regional scales. Led by its founder, Tonatiuh Martínez, we will learn how it was possible to develop landscape projects in places with particular characteristics and needs, taking into account the site program, orientation, views, and complementary information such as the site's history, photos, and documents that inform the criteria for developing a proposal. Taller de Paisaje Entorno has been behind several projects, including the conservation of the lava fields at Museo Universitario Arte Contemporáneo (MUAC), the open garden Biblioteca Vasconcelos, the restoration project of the stony and native landscape of the Museo Anahuacalli which they carried out in collaboration with Mauricio Rocha, the rescue of the lava field at the Casa Pedregal by Luis Barragán, or the installation Modthern Nature by Gabriela Galván at Arte Abierto.
Self-taught since the 80s in landscape, biology, and botany. He is the founder of Taller de Paisaje Entorno, a landscape workshop whose objective is to develop projects, provide consulting, offer courses, and organize exhibitions in landscape architecture, both nationally and internationally, for architectural firms, public and private institutions, and individuals. Martínez founded Mexico's only landscape workshop, an alternative space to his office located in Xochimilco. Its purpose is to disseminate, promote, and physically showcase the design of various spaces, highlighting the diversity of plant species used in projects, as well as all materials involved in their execution, with an artisanal approach that is integral to landscape work.

Arte Abierto inicia su programa de mediación y comunicación educativa 2022 con una conversación entre la investigadora y escritora Irmgard Emmelhainz y Sebastien Noel de Troika, tomando la exposición No Sound of Water como punto de partida.
