Practical workshop in English
Duration: 5 hours
Cultural management: Carlos Cruz (MX) + Estefanía Díaz (MX)
Exclusive workshop at FISURA International Experimental Film and Video Festival
Composing Sound with Light is a one-day workshop at Arte Abierto, part of FISURA’s academic program, taught in English by Australian artist Steven McInerney. This workshop proposes a practical exploration of the connections between light and sound through 16mm film. Using three film projectors, participants will create intermittent image loops by splicing individual frames onto an opaque black base.
When these loops are projected, they trigger analog synthesizers using light sensors. Each projector thus functions as a channel of an audiovisual instrument that combines image and sound in real time. The different combinations of loops generate visual and sonic patterns that form a collective composition.
The activity will begin with a presentation of McInerney’s experimental work and a 16mm film screening. A practical workshop will begin mid-morning and conclude with a live presentation open to the public.

Steven McInerney (Australia) is a London-based artist who combines 16mm film, digital media, and sound expertise to create expanded forms of cinema, live audiovisual performances, and installations. His work investigates emergent phenomena through time-varying media systems, using them as tools of exploration. His cinematic work is constructed from opposing energies, in a constant meditation between the sacred and the profane.
His live performances utilize multi-channel projections and real-time feedback systems, following a structuralist methodology that values error and reappropriation. From these elements emerge speculative narratives that often blur the lines between science and fiction. McInerney is the founder of Psyché Tropes, an interdisciplinary platform dedicated to research and publication in media archaeology that also produces a monthly show on Resonance 104.4 FM.
