Visual distortion workshop with Valentina Guerrero

This workshop invites you to explore the multiple ways in which a single landscape can be observed and represented. Through the creation of optical artifacts, each participant will experience how perception is transformed by the filters and tools used.

Through this workshop, Valentina Guerrero seeks to stimulate creativity and curiosity, inviting us to question and expand our way of seeing the environment through play and artistic experimentation.

Valentina Guerrero (Chile, 1994) Holds a master’s degree in Visual Arts from UNAM and is part of SOMA’s (Mexico City) educational program. Through her artistic research, Valentina explores issues related to the Capitalocene, hegemonic conceptions of nature, and the sociocultural meanings we assign to certain elements and bodies, such as the landscape. Her current work focuses on video, experimental writing, and the creation of glass pieces, which are activated through group cloud-gazing exercises. These optical and textual objects seek to reflect on how the sky and clouds can be perceived as monstrous traces of climate colonialism, linking empirical experiences with far-reaching historical events.

Her work has been exhibited nationally and internationally at the Anahuacalli Museum (MX), the Museum of Visual Arts (CL), the Fortnight Institute (USA), Espacio Belgrado (ARG), Roam Projects (DE), the Carrillo Gil Art Museum (MX), the Telearte Institute (CL), and the Artespacio Gallery (CL), among others.

Guided visit + Charms Workshop

Through his rainbows in advertisement format, Ugo Rondinone rescues popular phrases, book titles, and fragments of songs or poems so that we can project our own desires, reflections, and everyday complexities.

In this guided visit + workshop through the long last happy exhibition we will talk about the artist’s work and his interests around poetry, and we will compose a Poem to Go in the form of a bracelet, charm, necklace or keychain. We will make a portable poem that seeks to free the word from the confines of paper, taking it to a world in motion.

What triggers between us a fall, a stumble or a mistake? What meaning do we give to accidents and to all things that do not turn out as we expected?

We Don’t Make Mistakes, We Just Have Happy Accidents is a visit/workshop to Cositas exhibition. This dynamic invites us to explore accidents in art, in life, and the thin line that unites or separates them. It is a small pause in our Saturday to reimagine our notion of the unpredictable, the imperfect and the uncontrollable.

Through the intervention of tote bags using a dripping technique, participants will explore the “controlled accident” as a form of artistic production and, thus, have an experience that brings them closer to assuming that nothing can be completely controlled and that, as the good Bob Ross said, “we don’t make mistakes, we only have happy accidents.”

STONES, GARDENS AND CHARMS

Workshop with Miguel Cinta Robles

What do stones do in a garden? Perhaps they are part of a bench, a connecting path, or a dividing wall. What do the stones do in a forest? They can be fragments of a cave, a refuge for critters looking for a moment of privacy or a filter for the water that crosses a river. What do the stones do in the city? They are the fragment of a monument, a projectile in a protest or something that gets stuck in a shoe. Observing stones can help us think about other time scales, in dimensions that go beyond us as individuals. At first glance, a stone may seem like a static object, but its formation and movement have shaped the landscapes we inhabit.

Stones, Gardens and Charms is a reflective workshop to exercise contemplation, a space to question and rethink the garden as a containment and classification mechanism of what we understand by “nature”. We will reflect on the methods we use to observe and how they are reflected in the way we perceive our spaces and gardens. We will carry out some exploration exercises to understand the stones again and build other forms of “classification”, imagining that the stones can also be spells to attract water, be linked to lunar cycles, stories, esotericisms, to learn to observe, all we think, doesn’t seem to move.

This workshop with Miguel Cinta Robles is part of Arte Abierto’s Public Program around our current exhibition Modthern Nature by Gabriela Galván.

MIGUEL CINTA ROBLES
He lives between Oaxaca and Mexico City. He studied at the National University of Arts in Buenos Aires and studied visual arts at ENPEG “La Esmeralda” in Mexico City. His interests focus on building models that merge agriculture and sculpture with pedagogical strategies that enable forms of socialization and learning in connection with the land. He is the founder of “Domingo de cerro” a project dedicated to producing routes, walks, workshops and activations in the mountains of Oaxaca and other states of the republic. Currently, he collaborates in the syntropic reforestation and eco-construction project “Terreno familiar” where he dedicates himself to planting, giving workshops, building earth ovens and investigating, together with his family, models to achieve food sovereignty and live in interdependence within the ecosystems and the community of Tlalixtac de Cabrera.

MEMORY BEAT

This workshop is an invitation to explore personal memory through narrative, visual and tactile writing. We will investigate our own history and translate specific experiences into forms, sensations, intensities and flows.

Ceramics will allow us to capture not only stories and figures, but also forces, footprints and body movements. In addition to making an inquiry about intimacy and writing. The result will be a piece of pottery that each participant can take home, like a talisman.

No prior knowledge is required.

IMPORTANT: As we will be working on low-temperature ceramics, after the workshop, we will keep your piece for burning. A week later we will have the piece already fired and enameled available for you to pick up at Arte Abierto.

 

Sandra Sánchez Writes in different media, including ceramics. Her current research focuses on modes of collaborative writing and proposals for production and reception beyond the aesthetic relationship “artist-work-spectator”. In 2015 she founded Zona de Desgaste, a space dedicated to mediation, writing and critical reflection on contemporary art and art philosophy. She currently edits OndaMx magazine, leads Aeromoto Library and teaches at Universidad del Claustro de Sor Juana.
