ILLEGAL ART TED TALK

AMBULANTE

AMBULANTE

Ambulante goes to places that have limited access to screenings and education in documentary filmmaking, in a bid to build a participative, critical and informed audience, and to open new channels of expression and reflection in Mexico and in other countries.

Every year, for two months, Ambulante organizes an international documentary film festival that visits different states in Mexico. With an international exhibition of over one hundred films, approximately one hundred guests and more than one hundred and fifty venues, Ambulante promotes documentary cinema throughout Mexico. The tour seeks to widen the traditional exhibition circuits in the country, beyond the commercial film theaters so as to reach different groups.

As of 2019, Ambulante includes < Arte Abierto > as one of its venues in Mexico City. In May, < Arte Abierto > had an open-air screening of four of Ambulante’s documentary films at Artz Pedregal.

LA COLECCIÓN JUMEX

UGO RONDINONE (Switzerland, 1964)
LOVE INVENT US, 1999

Neon sign, acrylic, translucent foil, steel

In his artistic proposal, Ugo Rondinone uses “very basic raw symbols, something that everybody can relate to, from a child to an old person, from the East to the West.” His work emphasizes on creating an experience rather than conceptualizing or understanding it.

The rainbow is one of the most recurrent motives in Rondinone’s artwork. Since 1997 he has created large-scale signs with simple yet poetic messages. These metal structures shaped and colored like a rainbow, composed of large lit words seem to float in the air. This work seeks to be beautiful and fantastic; the rainbow is also a symbol used by the LGBT community and therefore this piece is about the freedom of loving whomever one chooses.

For Rondinone, this symbol is of special importance since it is a reminder of his long-term relationship with the acclaimed New York writer, poet and fellow artist John Giorno.

DAN GRAHAM (United States, 1942)
GROOVY SPIRAL, 2013

Two-way mirror, stainless steel

“My pavilions are always a kind of two-way mirror, which is both transparent and reflective simultaneously, and it changes as the sunlight changes. This relates to the changing landscape, but it also means that people on the inside and on the outside have views of each other superimposed, as each gaze at the other and at the material. It’s intersubjective.”

Dan Graham

Dan Graham’s pavilions are half way between design, art and functional architecture; they are built to create tangible experiences for the public. These works play with perspective and may even disorient the viewer, in a bid to question our everyday perception of spaces.

DANIEL BUREN

DANIEL BUREN (France, 1938)
DE LA ROTONDA DE LA FUENTE. CINCO COLORES PARA MÉXICO, 2018

In situ work, memorial to architect Manuel Tolsá

Marble, aluminum and colored glass

Daniel Buren’s work revolves around the abstraction of the form through lines and color; his artistic proposal is framed within the fields of architecture and urbanism. With his in situ work, he highlights certain aspects of the buildings and spaces he intervenes, and as a result he also has an impact on the landscape. Ultimately, his compositions address the relationship between human beings and their physical surroundings.

The artwork exhibited here was thought up and created to fit the central fountain of the ARTZ Pedregal complex. In doing so, the artist opened a dialogue with the space and its surroundings, by combining simple materials, geometric figures and solid colors that coexist with the water and the natural light.

Daniel Buren (France, 1938) have been working over five decades on the intersection between art, architecture and space. In the 60s developed the idea of the “degree zero of painting” as he called it, to play with the means and their relationship with the support and medium that made possible a work of art. His intervention projects are conceived and created in situ, borrowing and coloring the spaces in which they are presented. These pieces are meant to question how we look and perceive, as well as the way space can be used and appropriated. Buren’s work has been presented in museums, public spaces and art institutions from Germany, Belgium, United States, Spain, France, Italy and Mexico, among others.

AI WEIWEI

AI WEIWEI (China, 1957)
FOREVER, 2013

Stainless steel

Forever is China’s most popular bicycle brand and it has been mass-produced in Shanghai since 1940.

The sculpture consists of a series of bicycles tortuously exhibiting their iterative shape. It prompts a reflection on the individual in Chinese society, where little by little metropolitan growth has led to the emergence of other means of transport which have replaced the use of bicycles. Today, the urbanism of contemporary Chinese metropolis has left their utility and social status marginalized and diminished.

On the other hand, you can’t help but notice his reference to the ready-mades or found objects from the early 20th century, where the bicycle is one of the most recognizable figures.

Ai Weiwei (China, 1957) is one of the leading artists and cultural of his generation, both for his artistic production and political activism. His work moves between modes of production and social investigation, which defined the forms of representation and composition of his art. Through sculptures, photography, performances, installations and ready-made —usually uniting craftmanship and conceptual work—, explores the human existence in relation to economic, political, natural and social forces. His work has been presented in museums, public spaces and art institutions from Germany, Austria, Brazil, United States, France, England, Israel, Mexico, Portugal and Turkey, among others.

TANIA CANDIANI

TANIA CANDIANI (Mexico, 1974)
KIOSKO SONORO, 2018

Steel structure, trumpets, tubes, concrete base.

To create this interactive piece, the artist used as a starting point a traditional kiosk, and the social and cultural role it plays in the public square.

The sound sculpture reflects on the historic burden contained within this type of construction. It does so through its structure, which comprises a reticulated installation of trumpets, connected via rigid hoses to a single transmission point that can be activated by the public. The piece then acquires new attributions by allowing for a direct personal experience in a public environment.

Tania Candiani (Mexico, 1974) is a multidisciplinary artist working in the intersection between art, literature, design, music, architecture, science and technology. Her projects plays and approach to the different symbolic and communication systems used daily, such as the phonetic, graphic, linguistic and technological languages. Thus, her works —performances, installations, objects, sculptures, actions— seeks to reflect on the different ways in which we relate each other as social and cultural beings. Candiani has been fellow of the Sistema Nacional de Creadores de México (National System of Art Creators) since 2012 and represented Mexico at the 56th Venice Biennale. Her work has been presented in museums, public spaces and art institutions from Colombia, Cuba, United States, Italy, Lithuania, Mexico, Poland, United Kingdom and Russia, among others.

LUZ INSTANTE

ESPACIO ABIERTO

JULIA CARRILLO. LUZ INSTANTE

06.26.2021 – 09.19.2021

Luz instante is a journey through a series of optical artifacts that create a sensory continuum. Each piece links light, space and time, while encouraging us to experiment with our bodies. It is an invitation for each participant to own and inhabit the works from their own place. The visitor will create space and immediately activate the works, because when we enter a space the space enters us and the experience becomes an exchange, a fusion between subject and object, the here and now of light constituted by spatial encounters.

This journey through light begins with an outdoor artwork whose projections are activated by sunlight, so that its effects are temporary, intermittent, random. The path changes direction towards the interior of the room, a controlled light appears that becomes a substantial element of optical artifacts. Artifacts arise from phenomena that occur in nature, from everyday situations that we do see but not always observe. In the room, these artifacts become prosthetic extensions of the human body and lead us to dimension spaces that seem unusual, but are there, in our day to day life. They are devices that fuse the object with the subject, the materiality of the specular surfaces with introspection, with emotional impressions and, also, with curiosity. The artifacts transform during the journey, limit the interaction or open it to contain us, dose the sensory involvement, first the eye and then the body, as if we were progressively activating our perceptual capacities.

From her experiments with space, virtual sculptures emerge, geometric and illusory three-dimensional figurations that are discovered inside his kaleidoscopes. ‘Sculptures of light’ Julia calls them, because light is precisely the matter of these pieces. The artworks in this exhibit play with the viewer’s perception within different spaces, causing immersive situations that lead to a unique moment of discovery.

With the exhibition Luz instante, Julia Carrillo moves a part of her experimentation laboratory in which she has worked for several years to Espacio Arte Abierto. Luz instante is the result of her studies on light, on how it creates space, how it allows us to perceive what we inhabit and, in return, how it allows us to recognize moments or distinguish certain atmospheres.

Through this program we will develop unique educational strategies and activities to promote direct contact with our audiences.

To establish this physical space, dedicated to our audiences, < Arte Abierto > is proud to present the exhibition Furia y Poesía. 10 years of Atelier Romo. The exhibition recognizes and celebrates this comprehensive and multidisciplinary educational methodology, which rules by the concept of deep education, understood as all knowledge that accompanies us and improves our daily lives.

Working in a space located in ARTZ Pedregal architectural complex, gives us the opportunity to break with the usual circuits of contemporary art and build new audiences and participants from art.

< Arte Abierto > presents the exhibition Fury and Poetry. Atelier Romo 10 Years, opens from March 13th to June 13th, 2021 from 12:00 to 5:00 PM at Atelier Abierto’s space, located on the Ground Floor of ARTZ Pedregal: Periférico Sur 3720, Jardines del Pedregal, Álvaro Obregón in Mexico City.

ATELIER ROMO

For ten years Atelier Romo has developed an educational, comprehensive and multidisciplinary methodology based on the arts. Currently, the guiding axis is focused on deep education understood as all knowledge that accompanies us and improves our daily lives.

The methodology consists of integrating the body, thought, culture and art from constant and disciplined practice, into a relaxed work environment that covers all the requirements to apprehend and create without limitations.

Its lines of work are visual thinking and drawing; the basic principles for soft construction, including sewing, electricity and model making; and the development of a final project that has as outputs an exhibition and an editorial publication.

Atelier Romo has had various collaborations with institutions such as the Tamayo Museum, the Alumnos 47 Foundation, the Jumex Collection, various universities and art centers in the interior of the country, and abroad with the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York. Also, he was invited to develop a special project for the XII FEMSA Biennial.

In addition to the five printed monographs that it has compiled throughout its history, it has presented multiple exhibition and film projects in spaces such as Casa Vecina, the Tamayo Museum, the Sala de arte Público Siqueiros, La Tallera, the Visual Arts Center of Mérida and the Cervantes Institute in New York, among others.

Atelier Romo has a special interest on the pre-university community, with the intention of preparing them to know how to live better and to be able to respond efficiently to the historical moment they inhabit.
